Mid Ohio Oncology/Hematology To Build New Cancer Center, Patients To Have More Options, Increased Care In One Location.

February 16, 2006 (Columbus, OH) — Mid Ohio Oncology/Hematology (MOOH), operator of outpatient cancer and blood disorder treatment facilities throughout Central Ohio, plans to build a new center that will create 80 jobs and provide patients with treatment options from one location.

The new facility will enable MOOH to expand its presence in the region. Multiple sites are under consideration, with the preferred site near the airport on Cassady Ave., Columbus. Groundbreaking will occur in early 2006 with an expected opening in early 2007.

Currently, MOOH operates four outpatient treatment centers in Columbus and its suburbs, of which all will be consolidated into the new location. Those four include three in Columbus at 5825 Westbourne Ave., 745 W. State St., Suite 550B, and 285 E. State St., Suite 640; and one in Westerville at 495 Cooper Road, Suite 314. In addition, our physicians will continue to provide outreach services at offices in Chillicothe, Delaware, London and Mt. Vernon.

The new outpatient center will employ 210, which includes the current work force of 130 at the four centers to be consolidated, in addition to 80 full-time hires in administrative office and healthcare positions, such as physicians, nurse practitioners, oncology nurses, research nurses, pharmacy and lab technicians, radiology technicians, medical assistants, billing specialists, social workers and information technology coordinators. The hirings will occur over five years.

“We are committed to providing patients with comprehensive and world-class treatment of cancer and blood disorders, from the latest medical therapies and clinical trials to wellness care and support services,’’ MOOH President Mark Thompson, M.D., said.

“By creating a single point of entry for all treatment needs, we will ensure the delivery of services in a coordinated, efficient and cost-effective manner. This will go a long way toward making treatment even more convenient for patients and minimizing disruptions in their lives.”

The following are some of the services that will be provided at the outpatient facility:

  • Physician clinic
  • Chemotherapy treatment
  • Infusion services
  • Radiation therapy
  • Diagnostic imaging
  • Clinical laboratory services
  • Cancer research and trials
  • Specialty pharmacy
  • Gynecological oncology
  • Wellness services, such as patient education, nutrition counseling and psychosocial services

As part of the project, MOOH has applied to the city of Columbus for job-creation tax abatements. The city proposal would grant a 50-percent reduction in real-estate property taxes for 10 years. The tax abatements are a major factor in MOOH’s decision to build the center in Columbus and move forward with the $42 million investment in construction and technology that is expected to facilitate future growth in patients and employees. Specifically, the abatements will make financing for the project more economically feasible and enable MOOH to reinvest in technology and research.
